After completing secondary school I trained as a automotive diesel fitter completing my NZ Trade Certificate in 1971. In 1994 I enrolled in Earth Sciences with the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand - graduating with a MSc in 2002. In 2005 I started my first contract as a Water and Habitat Engineer with International Committee of Red Cross, Geneva, in Liberia. Sudan, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and the Philippines followed. Recent years have been taken up with a Engineering Geology consultancy and mechanical engineering in a family-run workshop in New Zealand. The water pump project has been a part-time activity starting in 2008. The final design did not evolve until 2017 when genuine field testing of a prototype began
